Bringing a new kitten into your home is a thrilling experience, whether it was eagerly anticipated or a sudden surprise. The initial month with your new feline companion is a time of adjustment and change, and there are several steps you can take to ensure a seamless transition for both you and your kitten.

Preparation Before the Arrival:

  • If you're planning to welcome a new kitten, take some time to prepare for their arrival by gathering essential supplies and creating a welcoming environment. Consider using synthetic calming pheromones to help ease the transition for your older cats and the new kitten.
  • Ensure your new kitten has their own space with a bed, food and water dishes, a litter box, and toys. Setting up a designated room for the kitten provides safety during the initial adjustment period.

The First Day:

  • The first day with your new kitten is exciting, but it's essential not to overwhelm them. Allow your kitten to explore the designated room or a safe space if you couldn't prepare beforehand.
  • If you have other pets, let them interact with the new kitten from a distance, always ensuring the kitten's safety. Provide a secure environment for your kitten, including access to litter boxes, food, and water, and let them rest if they need to hide or sleep.

The First 10 Days:

  • Over the next few days, your kitten will gradually explore their new surroundings. Use toys and treats to encourage them to venture beyond their safe space and get acquainted with litter boxes, food, and water.
  • Monitor your kitten's eating, drinking, and litter box habits. If you notice anything unusual, consult your vet and schedule an appointment for a check-up, vaccinations, and deworming.

The First 30 Days:

  • At the end of the first month, your kitten should have adapted to their new home, displaying increased activity and playfulness.
  • Introduce appropriate scratching surfaces, climbing items, and toys to channel their energy. Discourage undesirable behaviours early and provide positive alternatives.
  • Ensure your kitten receives initial vaccinations and discuss preventive measures with your vet.
  • If you have another cat, be patient with their adjustment to the new kitten. Use synthetic calming pheromones to facilitate bonding and promote positive interactions between the cats.

By following these guidelines during the first month, you can provide your new kitten with a smooth transition to their forever home, setting the stage for a happy and healthy life together.
