Guiding Your Newborn Kitten Through the First Week of Life

Features Editor: Ravi Teja Mandapaka
Rapid changes and growth occur in the initial week of a kitten's life. Born resembling miniature adult cats, newborns weigh around 3.5 ounces but double their weight within the first week. This period is crucial for monitoring their well-being.
Physical Development:
At birth, kittens fit in the palm; by the end of the week, they double their weight to approximately 7 ounces. Eyes and ears remain closed initially, and dependency on the mother for warmth, food, and hygiene is absolute.
Behavior Changes:
While little distinguishes a newborn from a one-week-old kitten, the increased activity becomes noticeable. Social interactions are limited to nursing battles, and playing with littermates is yet to commence.
Health and Care:
For orphaned or neglected kittens, mimicking the mother's role is vital. Temperature regulation is a concern, necessitating blankets or heating elements. Monitoring weight gain, nasal discharge, bloated bellies, and regular urination/defecation are essential.
Food and Nutrition:
Newborns derive nutrition from the mother's milk or specialized formula. Colostrum, produced in the first days, provides vital antibodies. Orphaned kittens may require bottle-feeding with a proper formula, consuming small amounts every two hours.
Training:
At this age, no specific training is feasible. Litter box training comes naturally once the mother is no longer needed for stimulation.
Caring for the Mother Cat:
Maintaining the mother cat's health is as crucial as monitoring the kittens. Proper nutrition, vaccination, and a stress-free environment contribute to the mother's and her offspring's well-being.
Always consult a veterinarian for personalized advice on caring for newborn kittens.
